The Last Dragonlord

For a thousand years, dragons have been nothing more than legends. The kingdoms of Eldoria, Veyr, Caldris, and Thorn have spent generations fighting over land, power, and ancient grudges. Their kings have forgotten the old stories of the Dragonlords-the legendary rulers who once rode dragons and united the world beneath a single banner. But the dragons have not forgotten. When nineteen-year-old stable boy Kael Arden discovers a wounded black dragon dying beneath the ruins of an abandoned fortress, he expects to find a monster. Instead, the dragon speaks his name. And when Kael touches its scales, an ancient mark awakens on his hand-a symbol belonging to a bloodline believed to have been extinct for a thousand years. Kael is the last Dragonlord. According to an ancient prophecy, the last heir will either unite the four kingdoms and restore the age of dragons-or unleash a war that will burn the entire world. But Kael wants no crown. He doesn't know how to command armies. He has never held a sword in battle. And the kings of the four kingdoms would rather kill him than allow the bloodline of the Dragonlords to return. As an ancient enemy rises from beyond the northern mountains, Kael must learn to ride the greatest dragon ever born, uncover the truth behind his family's disappearance, and convince four kingdoms that have hated each other for centuries to stand together. Because the war is coming. And this time, the enemy isn't fighting for a kingdom. It is fighting for the world.

Fantasy Stories on StoriesVale

Fantasy is the genre that builds the world before it tells the story. The magic system that has real rules and real costs. The kingdom that feels like it has centuries behind it. The character who is nobody until the moment they have to be somebody. That's what this category is built around.

Every story here on StoriesVale is original work, written by authors publishing directly on the platform. No fan fiction, no retellings of stories you already know - just writers constructing new worlds from the ground up, with their own rules, their own mythologies, and their own ways for everything to go wrong before it goes right. Most of these fantasy short stories are quick reads of ten to twenty minutes, so you can step into a whole new world in a single sitting.

What you'll find in this category

Fantasy is one of the broadest genres on the platform, so we've broken it into 21 subcategories that let you go straight to the kind of world you want to step into.

Epic Fantasy works at scale - wars, prophecies, kingdoms, and consequences that reach across generations. Quest & Adventure Fantasy sends its characters out with a goal and a road that fights back, while Sword & Sorcery keeps the focus tight: one character, one quest, the kind of danger that has to be fought through rather than negotiated with. In Portal Fantasy, an ordinary person steps through a door into somewhere that was never meant for them.

Dark Fantasy keeps the magic but removes the safety net - the world is brutal, the characters are morally complicated, and good outcomes are never guaranteed. Necromancer Stories deal with what happens when death becomes a tool, Demon & Angel fiction puts mortals in the middle of a war older than their world, and Witch & Warlock stories treat magic as a craft with a price.

Magic Academy puts characters inside an institution where power is taught, tested, and sometimes weaponized - rivalries, secrets, and the kind of friendships that either last a lifetime or end badly. Dark Academia Fantasy adds old libraries and darker secrets to the same setup, and Elemental Magic stories are built around fire, water, earth and air, and what happens when someone can command them.

Fae & Faerie draws on the older, stranger version of fairy lore - courts with politics underneath the beauty, deals with consequences buried in the wording, and creatures that are nothing like the stories made them sound. Royal Court Fantasy trades the forest for the throne room, where betrayal is quieter and just as deadly. If you want love at the center of the story, Fantasy Romance and Romantasy put the relationship and the magic on equal footing.

Dragon Stories range from companions to conquerors - the relationship between a person and something ancient that could destroy them is never simple. Shapeshifter Stories ask who someone is when they can be anyone. Mythology & Gods pulls from the deep end - pantheons, creation myths, divine interference in human lives, and the specific kind of trouble that comes from being noticed by something immortal - and Viking Fantasy brings the sagas, the sea and the old gods north.

And if you'd rather your magic arrive in familiar places, Urban Fantasy brings it into the present - the city looks familiar, but something underneath it doesn't follow the rules you thought applied - while Steampunk Fantasy runs it on brass, steam and clockwork.

Fantasy also crosses into other genres naturally, and many stories here do exactly that - an epic fantasy with a romance at its center, a dark fantasy that edges into horror, an urban fantasy that slides into thriller territory. If you find yourself pulling in those directions, our Romance, Horror and Action & Adventure categories are worth exploring alongside this one.
