The Compass of Flesh
Captain Elias Marsh doesn't navigate by the stars. He navigates by a compass made of bone and brass, a cursed instrument that ignores magnetic north and points straight to the nearest concentration of human suffering. For thirty years, he has followed it—salvaging misery, feeding on the agony of the dying, and telling himself he is doing it for a reason. He has collected the grief of the world, carrying it in his chest like a second heart. But when the compass leads him to a rotting cargo ship filled with the mutilated, he realizes it is no longer pointing at strangers. It is pointing at him. Elias has been carrying a prison for thirty years, and the cell has just been unlocked. He isn't the captain anymore. He is the harvest. And the only way to feed the compass is to sail himself into the deep.
